An interaction I had at lunch got me thinking a little bit about the simple things we can do or not do that can make an impact. Doesn’t take money, status, or a whole lot of time to make an impression in someone’s life even if it’s just for a moment or brings a smile.
So, what can you do or not do? The interaction at lunch revolved around being polite. The cashier took time out to compliment me on how polite I was as I was placing my order. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a huge deal. Me being polite won’t solve any major issues but her pointing it out of course made me feel good but I thought about it from her side.
What’s her side? Well, her day is a routine of customer after customer and if people do not make the effort to be at least a little friendly or polite think how that makes her day far less pleasant and drag on. I hear you out there, “I’m in a hurry” or “I’ve got other things on my mind”, we all do trust me. You are going to take pretty much the same time to place your order, so it takes no extra time to make eye contact, smile, say thank you.
It seems in today’s world that we have gotten away from the “do” when it comes to polite or pleasant human interactions and more to the “not do”. Heck right now you don’t even need to see or talk to a human to place/receive an order. We blame the rush of the world and our lives and it’s all understandable because “hey delivery to your porch is AWESOME”! What we can’t have happen though is to forget to engage and enjoy the people we meet.
We are getting more and more separated and divided in our day to day lives and people are going through a lot. The one thing we can do is kick it up a level when interacting with them. You never know how far a smile will go to brighten a day or polite/happy interactions can benefit a worker. It won’t cost you and after a while you won’t even know you are doing it. Make the world a better place by SHINING BRIGHT!! Much love all!
