It is really interesting sometimes how things come together. On top of that in the moment or moments if you can see the bigger picture or do you get tied down to the right now.
Last night I watched the “Dream On” documentary about the 1996 USA Women’s Basketball Team and how they changed the face of women’s basketball in this country and around the world. For those of you who don’t know the Olympic Committee for basketball used to put the team together about 6 weeks before the game and up until the late 80’s it worked well. In the early 90’s other countries had national teams together all year and well it showed. Losses in the 92 Olympics and 94 World Championships showed something needed to change.
So, the NBA working with USA Basketball set up a long and grueling training and playing schedule that lasted about a year prior to the 96 games. These ladies were the best of the best but learned a lot more on this journey. One thing they learned and executed flawlessly is the understanding that this quest to 60-0 was about far more than just the 96-gold medal. They knew that in all the details what was coming together would not only change their lives but the lives of young players for going on 25 years now.
See the NBA was very interested in this tour and time leading up to the Olympics to see if a WNBA could really work. So, they bankrolled this tour but more importantly took on all the PR and planning of the time. These ladies were booked pretty much 24-7 with media, autographs, open practices, and games. Even though they weren’t told about the WNBA possibility (at least at first), they saw how things were coming together. They saw the 30,000-foot view and knew what they did then would allow others to dream.
These ladies growing up could root on their favorite NBA teams, but they knew their only “shot” was pro ball over seas in maybe not the best conditions. They didn’t have the chance to dream past college ball as a certainty. Yet they worked and were put in a position with this national team to really see how things could come together. The ladies saw what their actions and words could mean for generations to come, and they got it done. Their successes lead to a WNBA that has been around 25 years, amazing. More than that they opened up the opportunity for so many girls to dream about what they could do for a living.
So great summary right but what does it have to do with the rest of us “regular” people? Follow their example to take a step back and see what your blood, sweat and tears could mean to someone 25 years from now. Seek out the details and take the effort to see how things might come together not for you but for the future and what your impact could mean. The results of how things come together might just surprise you and lead you to push a little farther.
Have a great day, shine bright and much love!!
